Our Journey to CALIVENCE

Our journey to CALIVENCE began 25 years ago when we first fell in love with wine and farming. This journey eventually brought us to Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara, California where the winds, cool climate, clay and limestone soil were ideal to plant Bordeaux varietal grapes. In 2019, we planted 4 acres of Bordeaux varietal grapes: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and sauvignon blanc. We embraced the philosophy of “regenerative farming practices” by planting 120 olive trees, 70 fruit trees, lavender, French herbs, and a French culinary garden all to create a vineyard with biodiversity encouraging and supporting nature.

We hope you take this journey with us by enjoying our wine and visiting our
Wine Tasting Bar + Bistro in the Texas Hill Country.

History of 419 W Main

The house at 419 West Main Street, now CALIVENCE Wine Tasting Bar + Bistro, was built by Wilhelm Crenwelge in the late 1860s to function as a rental property. Located on part of Townlot 257, the land originally came from the German Emigration Company and passed through several owners, including members of the Kolmeier and Dannheim families, before Crenwelge acquired it in 1865. The home stayed in the Crenwelge family for nearly a century. Its original floor plan was modest, with two rooms on each level and minimal windows on the west side. The structure is set back slightly from the street, allowing room for a front garden shaded by trees, and its historic design includes two front doors and a porch. The home reflects the area’s early German heritage and remains a preserved example of 19th-century rental housing in Fredericksburg. We are proud that CALIVENCE Wine Tasting Bar + Bistro now occupies the space, honoring its legacy while bringing new life to this storied location.
